Used EV prices rise 9.8% as demand outpaces gas-powered cars

An iSeeCars study found used electric vehicles are gaining value and selling faster than gasoline-powered cars, while higher fuel prices may be reshaping used-car shopping behavior.

Used EV prices rise 9.8% as demand outpaces gas-powered cars

On the Dash:

  • Used EV prices rose 9.8% year over year to an average of $32,533 in September 2026, compared with a 4.9% increase for hybrids and a 0.3% gain for gasoline vehicles.
  • Used EVs averaged 41.9 days on the market, selling nearly 13 days faster than gas-powered vehicles, whose average selling time increased to 54.8 days.
  • Demand varies significantly by model. The Lexus IS 500 sold in 24.3 days on average, while the Ford Escape Plug-In Hybrid took 154.5 days, underscoring the importance of model-level inventory and pricing decisions.

An analysis by iSeeCars, which examined over 1.5 million used vehicles, found that EVs experienced the largest year-over-year price increase among the three powertrain categories.

In September 2026, the average price of used EVs rose by 9.8% to $32,533, up $2,896 from $29,637 the previous year. Conversely, hybrid prices increased by 4.9% to $34,476, while gas vehicle prices saw a modest rise of 0.3%, reaching $31,954. As a result, used EVs now average $579 more than gas-powered cars, reversing the trend from September 2025, when EVs were $2,227 less expensive on average.

According to Karl Brauer, Executive Analyst at iSeeCars, higher fuel prices likely contributed to the shift, along with a recovery in demand following the loss of federal incentives a year earlier. In September 2026, used EVs spent an average of 41.9 days on the market, down 10.1% from 46.6 days a year earlier. In contrast, gas-powered vehicles averaged 54.8 days on the market, an increase of 19.9% from 45.7 days in September 2025. Hybrids also improved slightly, averaging 48.6 days on the market, down from 49.2 days the previous year. This change indicates used EVs sold nearly 13 days faster than gas vehicles, reversing the prior-year trend.

Model-level performance varies widely

Per the analysts, the Lexus IS 500 topped the list as the fastest-selling used vehicle, averaging 24.3 days on the market. The Audi A4 Allroad and Audi Q4 Sportback e-tron followed closely, with average selling times of 29.5 and 29.8 days, respectively.

However, three EVs made the overall top 10 fastest-selling list:

    • Audi Q4 Sportback e-tron
    • Toyota bZ4X
    • Lexus RZ 300e

Meanwhile, the Ford Escape Plug-In Hybrid was the slowest-selling model overall, averaging 154.5 days on the market. The Lincoln Corsair hybrid and Mercedes-Benz S-Class hybrid also ranked among the three slowest-selling vehicles. These findings highlight that while there is stronger demand for EVs and hybrids overall, not every electrified model is guaranteed quick turnover.

Large SUVs and trucks tend to sell more slowly, with the Cadillac Escalade IQ the slowest-selling used EV in the study, averaging 128.7 days on the market. The GMC Sierra EV and Chevrolet Silverado EV followed, averaging 93.2 and 89.1 days, respectively. Other slow-selling electric models included the Volvo EX90, Dodge Charger, and GMC Hummer EV. Brauer noted that while high fuel prices seem to favor well-executed, desirable used EVs, they don’t ease demand challenges for less popular models.

Recent price trends

According to the study, used EV prices fell year over year in the first three months of 2026 before returning to growth in April. In September, used EV prices recorded their sixth consecutive month of year-over-year growth, rising 9.8%, slightly less than August’s 10.3% gain. Hybrid prices also rebounded, increasing 4.9% year-over-year in September after earlier declines. Gasoline vehicle prices, meanwhile, declined for much of the first seven months of 2026 before returning to modest growth in August and September.
