On the Dash:
- GM and SAIC extended their joint venture through 2047.
- SAIC-GM plans at least 30 new energy vehicles by 2030.
- China-developed Buick NEVs could begin reaching international markets as soon as October.
General Motors and SAIC Motor extended their joint venture 20 years through 2047, targeting new growth in China’s rapidly shifting auto market.
SAIC-GM plans to launch at least 30 new energy vehicles (NEVs) by 2030 and will expand the use of technology developed in China specifically for Chinese consumers. The company also intends to sharpen its focus on the Buick and Cadillac brands in China, reflecting the market’s rapid shift toward electrified and intelligent vehicles.
According to the automaker’s media release, SAIC-GM will export the Buick Electra E7 overseas starting in October, marking the joint venture’s first premium NEV sold abroad. The joint venture has identified the Middle East, Africa, South America, Mexico, and the Asia-Pacific region as potential growth markets. GM indicated that this strategy will let the joint venture leverage China’s development capabilities and speed in selected global markets.
Notably, Buick launched its premium Electra NEV sub-brand in 2025, and the lineup now includes models in the sedan, SUV, and MPV segments. These models offer various powertrain options, including battery-electric, plug-in hybrid, and extended-range electric systems. Buick delivered more than 10,000 units of the Electra E7 in its first month on the market.
GM and SAIC formed the joint venture in 1997, and SAIC-GM has produced and delivered more than 20 million vehicles since then. GM stated that the renewed partnership will focus on technological transformation, new growth opportunities, and sustainable profitability, particularly targeting China’s rapidly growing NEV market.
Dealer impact
For dealers, this expanded partnership could provide greater access to China-developed electrified products over time. A broader NEV portfolio may enhance Buick’s product offerings as consumer demand for electrified vehicles evolves. Dealers should remain attentive to future product announcements related to SAIC-GM’s 30-vehicle NEV rollout through 2030.
