The Lexus ES has always been about comfort, quiet luxury, and reliability, but for 2026, Lexus is taking its best-selling luxury sedan in a completely different direction. During an interview with Jake Robin from Lexus Marketing, Lauren Fix and Karl Brauer discussed the all-new eighth-generation 2026 Lexus ES lineup, a vehicle that now offers both hybrid and fully electric powertrains under the same sleek body design.
This is one of the most significant changes in the ES’s 37-year history. Lexus calls it a “multi-pathway” strategy, meaning customers can choose between hybrid and battery-electric power without sacrificing styling, interior quality, or overall design. According to Lexus, about 80 percent of buyers are still expected to choose hybrid models, while roughly 20 percent are projected to move into the all-electric versions.
The new ES rides on a Lexus-first multi-pathway architecture that was specifically engineered to support both electrified powertrains. That flexibility allows Lexus to offer multiple drivetrains while maintaining the same refined luxury experience customers expect from the brand.
The lineup includes three primary models. The ES 350h hybrid remains the volume seller, while the ES 350e becomes the front-wheel-drive all-electric option. At the top of the range sits the ES 500e, a dual-motor all-wheel-drive EV delivering 338 horsepower and impressive acceleration. Lexus says the 500e can reach 60 mph in just 5.1 seconds, putting it squarely into sport sedan territory while still prioritizing comfort and refinement.
The ES 500e also delivers an estimated 276 miles of driving range from its 74.7-kWh lithium-ion battery pack. Buyers get an NACS charge port with Tesla Supercharger compatibility, something many luxury buyers are now demanding. Lexus includes an 11kW onboard charger and a 150kW fast-charging cable, allowing the battery to charge in roughly 28 minutes under ideal conditions.
For buyers focused more on efficiency than outright performance, the front-wheel-drive ES 350e offers 221 horsepower and up to 307 miles of estimated range. Even with the lower output, the 350e still delivers respectable acceleration with a 0-60 mph time of 7.4 seconds.
The hybrid ES 350h continues to play a major role in the lineup and may ultimately be the sweet spot for many consumers. The updated sixth-generation Lexus hybrid system now produces 244 horsepower, up significantly from last year’s 215 horsepower. Fuel economy improves as well, reaching up to 46 mpg combined for front-wheel-drive models and 44 mpg combined with all-wheel drive. Lexus also noted that while 91 octane fuel is recommended, the hybrid system will still run on regular 87 octane gasoline.
For the first time, the ES hybrid is available with all-wheel drive. Front-wheel-drive versions use two electric motor generators, while AWD models add a third electric motor powering the rear axle through an e-axle system. Performance is nearly identical between configurations, with Lexus estimating 0-60 mph times of 7.3 seconds for FWD and 7.1 seconds for AWD models.
Visually, the new ES takes a more modern and upscale approach. The sedan is longer, lower, and wider than the outgoing model, giving it a stronger road presence. Lexus redesigned the front lighting with inward-facing daytime running lights and dual L-signature LED lamps. Flush door handles, power-folding mirrors, a full glass roof, and available soft-close doors on Luxury trims help move the ES further upscale.
The electric models feature subtle aerodynamic changes, including the absence of the hybrid model’s upper front air intake. Standard 19-inch wheels are shared between hybrid and EV models, while optional 21-inch wheels are available for the 350e and 500e. The ES 500e also gets its own unique wheel design.
Inside, Lexus focused heavily on technology and comfort. A new 14-inch Lexus Interface touchscreen dominates the dashboard, paired with a 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster. NuLuxe seating surfaces remain standard, along with heated and ventilated front seats. Lexus also adds bamboo-forged trim, ambient lighting, a wireless charging pad, and an electronic toggle shifter to modernize the cabin.
Luxury models raise the premium feel even further with available 17-speaker Mark Levinson surround sound audio, memory settings for the driver’s seat and steering wheel, and the Executive Package on the ES 350e. That package adds heated and ventilated rear seats, rear-seat massage functions, an ottoman for the passenger-side rear seat, separate rear climate controls, and a power rear sunshade.
Cargo space also improves, growing to 17.4 cubic feet, which is 3.5 cubic feet larger than the previous ES. However, Lexus confirmed there is no front trunk on the EV models.
Safety technology also sees a major update. The 2026 ES introduces Lexus Safety System+ 4.0, adding enhanced driver-assistance technologies including Blind Spot Monitor, Rear Cross-Traffic Alert, Front Cross Traffic Alert, Lane Change Assist, Traffic Jam Assist, and Driver Monitor technology. A drive exterior recorder is now standard across all trims.
Pricing remains competitive considering the amount of technology and electrification included. The ES 350e starts at $48,895 and tops out around $57,195. The hybrid ES 350h ranges from $52,495 to $55,895, while the more powerful ES 500e starts at $51,895 and reaches approximately $60,295 when fully equipped.
During the conversation with Lauren Fix and Karl Brauer, Jake Robin emphasized that Lexus understands many luxury buyers are still not fully ready to commit to EV ownership, which is why the brand continues investing heavily in hybrid technology alongside battery-electric vehicles. That balanced strategy may ultimately give Lexus a stronger position in the luxury market than brands aggressively abandoning hybrids altogether.
The 2026 Lexus ES is no longer simply the comfortable luxury sedan people remember. It has evolved into a technology-focused, electrified flagship for mainstream Lexus buyers, offering multiple powertrain choices without forcing customers into a one-size-fits-all solution.
