GM recalls over 23K Corvettes due to potential fire hazard

In affected vehicles, spilled fuel from the filler pipe can leak onto the radiator, vaporize from the cooling fan, and ignite if it reaches an ignition source.

On the Dash:

  • General Motors (GM) is recalling over 23,000 vehicles due to a fuel leak that may cause a fire.
  • The recall covers 2023–2026 Chevrolet Corvettes, including the 2026 Convertible and Coupe variants.
  • As a remedy, dealers will install a shield that will divert leaked fuel away from surfaces behind the quarter panel.

General Motors (GM) is recalling over 23,000 vehicles in the United States due to concerns of a fire risk when refueling, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration announced on Tuesday.

In affected vehicles, the fuel-filler pipe and fuel-filled pocket are located above the radiator surface and cooling fan. During refueling, excess fuel may spill into the pocket and leak onto the radiator surface. The cooling fan then blows this fuel across the radiator, which causes it to vaporize. If the vapor comes into contact with an ignition source, it could catch fire.

The recall covers 23,656 select 2023–2026 Chevrolet Corvette models, including the Convertible and Coupe variants from 2026, equipped with a left-side radiator and fan configuration.

According to the report, GM launched a product investigation on June 17. The probe identified four alleged fires related to the defect, with two of the incidents resulting in minor alleged injuries.

As a remedy, dealers will install shield inserts that will divert spilled fuel away from surfaces behind the quarter panel.

GM will begin to mail owner notification letters on Oct. 6, and a follow-up notification will be sent once the remedy is available.

NHTSA anticipates that only 0.1% of the recalled vehicles have the defect, and the recall number is 25V536.
