VinFast slashes sticker prices as it debuts the VF9 in the U.S.

VinFast is counting on its new VF9 to make an impact in the United States EV market.
VF9

VinFast, a Vietnamese automaker and newcomer to the market, has officially begun to make its U.S. deliveries of its highly anticipated VF9 SUV. This all-electric three-row SUV will compete directly with the Kia EV9 and Cadillac Vistiq.

The automaker is introducing two trims in the United States: the entry-level VF9 Eco, priced at $69,800, and the upgraded VF9 Plus, priced at $73,800. The first trim to launch is the VF9 Plus, with the VF9 Eco expected to launch later this year.

To enhance its competitive position in the market, the EV maker has reduced the prices of both trims by an average of $12,000 from the initially announced prices. This mid-market pricing allows it to compete directly with the Kia EV9 and Cadillac Vistiq. Although the VF9 is somewhat more expensive than the Kia EV9, it is still cheaper than the Cadillac Vistiq.

VinFast offers a monthly promotional lease of $529 for the first 100 deliveries to entice early buyers. This deal reflects a discount of $3,500 with a $2,000 downpayment.

Both trims use a 123-kWH battery to deliver approximately 330-mile (Eco) and 291-mile (Plus) range. Dual-motor all-wheel drive delivers 402 horsepower and pound-feet of torque.

Charging is also highly convenient, which is crucial for appealing to consumers. The EV can support Plug & Charge and Auto Charge at compatible chargers. The DC fast charger can replenish the battery from 10% to 70% within 35 minutes.

It is still unclear whether buyers will qualify for federal tax credits when they purchase VinFast’s new EVs. However, they will likely qualify for a $7,500 tax credit when leased.

VinFast’s market reputation will depend significantly on how well the VF9 is received. The automaker will need more time to improve its initial lukewarm reception from the public. This lack of enthusiasm can largely be attributed to recalls in 2021 and unfavorable reviews from journalists.
