European automakers face pressure at Paris Motor Show as EV competition heats up

Many automakers hope the Paris Motor Show will mark a turning point as they showcase affordable EVs to keep pace with Chinese rivals.
Auto giants gathered at the Paris Motor Show to unveil their latest innovations and address the growing challenges in the EV market.

Auto giants gathered at the Paris Motor Show to unveil their latest innovations and address the growing challenges in the race to electrification. The biennial event, running from October 14 to October 20, 2024, is pivotal for European automakers grappling with faltering EV demand, profit warnings, and intensifying competition from Chinese manufacturers.

Volkswagen, BMW, and Stellantis have all recently issued profit warnings, highlighting the obstacles European manufacturers face in the transition to electric vehicles. The pressure is set to increase with stricter emissions-reduction targets coming into force next year. Many automakers hope the Paris Motor Show will mark a turning point as they showcase affordable EVs to keep pace with Chinese rivals.

One standout at the show was Peugeot, the French carmaker, which drew attention with its futuristic Hypersquare steering wheel. Resembling a video game controller, the rectangular wheel is set to go into production in 2026, with Peugeot aiming to appeal to younger drivers. Featured in the Inception concept car, the Hypersquare was also a focal point for French President Emmanuel Macron, who visited the Peugeot display alongside Stellantis CEO Carlos Tavares.

Chinese automaker BYD made waves by introducing its Yangwang U8 plug-in hybrid SUV to a French audience. Equipped with four electric motors, the U8 boasts unique features such as the ability to “swim” for up to 30 minutes, turn 360 degrees on the spot, and park sideways. A BYD spokesperson emphasized the vehicle’s floating capability as a potential lifesaving feature during floods. The SUV also includes a built-in drone that offers drivers real-time navigation insights.

Meanwhile, Renault unveiled its retro-inspired R4, a small electric SUV that pays homage to the classic Renault 4. Designed to rival budget EV models from Chinese competitors, the R4 is part of Renault’s effort to attract buyers seeking affordable, compact EV options.

Germany’s Volkswagen premiered its seven-seater Tayron SUV, available in mild hybrid and plug-in hybrid variants.
