Michigan dealership urges locals to assist food pantry in need

For a chance to win tickets to a Detroit Tigers game, a Southeast Michigan car dealership is encouraging its neighborhood to help the nearby, local food pantry.

The incentive follows a social media call to action from Monroe’s Oaks Village Food Pantry. According to the pantry’s president, it’s demand for food has increased and is expected to continue to grow.

Workers at CR Chrysler Dodge Jeep Ram in Adrian, Michigan set up a food drive and said that if you donate, you get entered to win.

Lamont Shufford reported that during his two months of voluntary service at the Monroe Oaks Village Food Pantry, he noted that several of the once-full shelves were now just half-empty.

Shufford stated, “We just received some material in, but as you can see, it didn’t fill up the stack.

Since hunger led Shufford to a self-admitted life of crime, he now volunteers at the church and pantry because it taught him how to ask for help and that “hard times don’t have to be a life sentence.” However, the nonprofit still needs help meeting the demand.

Pastor Heather Boone said the Oaks Village pantry had given away more than 2,000 food boxes in the last two months. Whereas previously, it was averaging 100 boxes of food monthly.

Jessica Liner, a car salesperson at CR Chrysler Dodge Jeep Ram of Adrian, heard Oak Village’s cries for assistance. The dealership now accepts nonperishable pantry items, canned goods, and packaged food eligible for donations.

The items can be dropped off at the dealership by June 26 at 6 p.m.
