Unconventional Polestar 4 will launch next year without a rear window

Polestar has revealed the Polestar 4, the latest in its growing lineup of electric vehicles and the brand’s first “SUV Coupé.”

The automaker unveiled the new model at the Shanghai Auto Show on April 17, giving customers a first glance at its rather unique design. Most notably, the Polestar 4 forgoes the rear window and instead features an extended sunroof and closed back. To see behind them, drivers will use the camera-enabled rearview mirror, which the brand says offers better visibility than traditional designs. The roof is also electrochromic, meaning that drivers can adjust the glass’s opacity.

Setting its polarizing design aside, the Polestar 4 features an impressive dual motor option capable of reaching 60 mph in 3.8 seconds, making it the speediest vehicle in the automaker’s lineup. Despite its strength, this powertrain has a slightly lower driving range than the single-motor version, lasting for roughly 270 miles compared to the latter’s 300. Both models use a battery capable of charging 5% to 80% in just over half an hour with a DC fast charger.

The model will also use a different production architecture than Polestar’s other products. While the EV brand has used the Volvo framework in the past, the Polestar 4 will be built on Geely’s Sustainable Experience Architecture (SEA) platform. For clarity’s sake, all three companies fall under the same business umbrella: Geely owns Volvo, Volvo owns Polestar.

The automaker declined to set an exact price at the auto show but did estimate it would cost buyers around $60,000. More concrete pricing is not expected until 2024, the same year the Polestar 4 will become available for purchase.
