GM Recalls 338,000 SUVs over daytime running lights malfunction

GM

General Motors has recalled over 338,000 full-size SUVs after discovering a software glitch affecting the computer that controls the vehicle’s daytime running lights.

According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, the daylight running lights may not deactivate when the headlights are switched on. This could create extra glare for oncoming traffic, which could be hazardous.

The recall affects 2021 Cadillac Escalades and Escalades ESVs, Chevrolet Tahoes, Chevrolet Suburbans, GMC Yukons, and GMC Yukon XLs.

The release from the NHTSA reads, “Daytime Running Lights that do not deactivate as intended may cause a glare, reducing visibility and increasing the risk of a crash.” The document also says, “dealers will update the Body Control Module software, free of charge.”

The issue was first discovered by a GM engineer during validation testing this past August, according to Autoblog. An investigation followed, resulting in the recall. Owners can expect a letter regarding the recall to be mailed by December 9. More information is available on the NHTSA’s website.
