Sources say Hyundai plans to build EV plant in Georgia

This week, sources close to the matter said that Hyundai is planning on building an electric vehicle plant close to its existing facilities in Georgia. Specific details regarding job numbers or expected costs were not provided, but the facility will, reportedly, be utilized to manufacture Hyundai’s Ioniq 7 and Kia’s EV9.

Both brands are working to transition to all-electric vehicles in the near future, as they are hoping to have a combined 31 EVs available by 2030.

Hyundai has been planning on building an EV plant in the U.S. but has never provided any information on where it may be located. In a statement to Reuters, the automaker said that it is “excited to announce a new EV plant plan in the United States soon, but [the automaker does] not have details to share at this stage.”

Georgia’s Economic Department also refused to confirm the State is in talks with Hyundai, stating that the department “[does] do not comment on speculation about economic development projects.”

The state of Georgia is likely hoping Hyundai will choose it for its new EV plant. Georgia is home to other EV companies, such as EV battery-maker SK Innovation. While SK Innovation previously refused to comment on a possible partnership, a source has said the company would be supplying its batteries for Hyundai’s Ioniq 7 vehicle.

Electric automaker Rivian is also expected to build a $5 billion factory in Georgia, which it hopes to have completed by the end of 2024.
