Stellantis announced a second delay in launching two high-profile battery electric Ram pickups to be produced at the Sterling Heights Assembly Plant. The automaker confirmed the plans on Thursday.
The Ram 1500 Ramcharger plug-in hybrid, previously scheduled for production later this year, will begin production in early 2026. The fully-electric Ram 1500 REV variant has been pushed out to 2027.
Initially, both models were expected to launch in late 2024. However, in December 2023, Stellantis shifted the production timelines. In response to high consumer interest, the automaker scheduled the Ramcharger to launch by 2025 and pushed the REV to 2026. The Ramcharger will be delayed to early 2026, and the REV until 2027.
The decision to delay the launches comes amid sluggish EV pickup demand. Rival automakers Ford and General Motors have also experienced softer sales than anticipated for their fully electric truck models. Stellantis executives, however, remain confident in the Ramcharger’s potential. The company’s push back will allow them to extend their “quality validation period” to ensure the highest-quality production.
Despite the delays, the Sterling Heights Assembly Plant remains active as workers continue to build gas-powered Ram 1500s, one of Stellantis’ most popular vehicles. In order to meet the demand for the vehicle, the plant operates three shifts, often six days per week. The plant is expected to remain busy through the year with upcoming powertrain updates and the introduction of new trim options, including the more affordable Ram 1500 Express.
