Shoppers join the invite list by entering a name, email address and ZIP code on Ford’s Fathom page. Ford says it will keep signed-up customers informed as the reveal approaches. Ford announced the $28,350 price in August, which includes the standard-range battery and excludes the $1,595 destination and delivery fee. With destination, the pickup starts at $29,945. Dealer documentation fees are extra too. Ford has not yet released an EPA-estimated driving range.

What Ford has said about the Fathom

The Fathom is the first vehicle built on Ford’s new Universal Electric Vehicle Platform. Ford describes it as a midsize electric truck that seats five adults. The automaker projects more passenger volume than a Toyota RAV4. The truck also has a frunk and a bed for added cargo flexibility. Notably, every vehicle is BlueCruise-capable for hands-free highway driving and offers bidirectional power capability. BlueCruise integrates with Apple Maps, which also powers navigation on the large touchscreen.

Standard equipment includes a Digital Key, remote control through the Ford app, Apple CarPlay and Android Auto.

How Ford chose the name

According to Kay Hart, General Manager of Ford Model e, Ford spent nine months choosing the name. The team reviewed Ford’s naming archives, from the Galaxie and Taurus to the Ranchero. Separately, two Ford copywriters proposed Fathom, which remained in a file of hundreds of options until it was selected. Up to 15 engineers chose their favorites before each round of cuts, and Fathom made it through every round. Focus groups ranked it as their top choice. A fathom is a unit of length—about six feet—used to measure water depth. The word also means to understand something completely.
