Elon Musk offers $1M a day incentive for voter registration ahead of election

The initiative, however, may face legal challenges.

In a bold effort to drive voter turnout in swing states, Elon Musk announced he will randomly award $1 million daily to registered voters who sign a petition for his pro-Trump political action committee (PAC). The initiative, aimed at energizing Musk’s fanbase to participate in the election, was revealed at an America PAC event in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania. Musk, the CEO of Tesla and SpaceX, said the cash prize will be available every day until the election.

During the event, Musk surprised the audience by calling up a petition signer, John Dreher, and presenting him with a $1 million check. He described the campaign as “a fun and good use of money,” adding that it was crucial to encourage voter engagement in key battleground states. The petition is open to Arizona, Georgia, Michigan, Nevada, North Carolina, Pennsylvania, and Wisconsin registered voters. The deadline for signing is Monday night, coinciding with Pennsylvania’s voter registration deadline.

The initiative, however, may face legal challenges. Rick Hasen, a UCLA law professor and election law analyst, suggested that Musk’s move could violate federal election laws. Specifically, offering payment for voter registration or voting can result in fines or imprisonment under federal statutes. Hasen expressed concerns that this distorts the political process by allowing wealthy individuals to influence voter behavior.

Pennsylvania Governor Josh Shapiro voiced similar concerns, calling Musk’s plan “deeply concerning” and suggesting that law enforcement should review the initiative’s legality. Musk’s pro-Trump events have also sparked controversy, as he continues to promote debunked voter fraud claims and criticize the Biden administration.

Musk, whose companies rely heavily on government contracts, has taken a critical stance toward several federal agencies, arguing that regulations stifle innovation. During his Harrisburg appearance, Musk maintains a general distrust of government involvement despite his companies’ reliance on public funds, calling for deregulation and less federal oversight.

Musk’s political efforts appear focused on boosting support for Trump, although he mentioned the former president only sparingly during the event. Instead, Musk’s comments centered on his broader ideological views, advocating for a government efficiency commission and expressing skepticism of government mandates, including those on technologies like self-driving cars.
