Demands for Tesla boycott emerge in Europe amid Musk’s controversial comments

The backlash ignited after Musk's controversial hand gestures on stage at Trump's inagurtion and his speech at a German AfD rally.
Elon Musk's controversial hand gestures at Trump's inauguration and speech at a German AfD rally sparked calls for a Tesla boycott in Europe.

Demands for a Tesla boycott are now circulating in Europe following Elon Musk’s controversial appearances and remarks, which have sparked a significant backlash. His involvement in political affairs and comments on sensitive historical issues have escalated the situation.

On Saturday, Musk spoke virtually at a rally for the Alternative for Germany (AfD), which is known to be a far-right nationalist party. During his speech, Musk encouraged the AfD party to be proud of their German heritage following up with a comment that there was “too much of a focus on past guilt” in which many individuals speculate may be a reference to Nazis. In addition, he also referred to multiculturalism as the dilution of the uniqueness of different cultures. These highly controversial comments follow Musk’s performance of what appeared to be a Nazi salute during President Trump’s inauguration ceremony on Monday, January 20.

On the anniversary of the Auschwitz liberation, a few days after Musk’s appearance at the AfD rally, Poland’s Minister of Sports and Tourism, Slawomir Nitras, publically condemned Musk and demanded a boycott of Tesla and its electric vehicles.

Additionally, in Germany, authorities are investigating images that were projected onto the Tesla Gigafactory in Berlin that showed Musk performing the Nazi-style salute at Trump’s inauguration. In Germany, any display of Nazi symbols is against federal law.

The U.S. Anti-Defamation League (ADL) defended what they referred to as an “awkward gesture”, however, Musk’s consistent posts across social media poking fun at the situation added more fuel to the fire.

This scandal is just another drop in the bucket for Elon Musk, whose controversial politicking and behavior have led to significant global backlash. With tensions already high in the European market, the potential impact on Tesla’s presence and sales in Europe is a cause for concern.
