Canada retaliates with tariffs as U.S. trade tensions escalate

Canada imposed tariffs on $20 billion of U.S. goods after trade talks collapsed, raising new uncertainty for North American businesses.

Canada retaliates with tariffs as U.S. trade tensions escalate

On the Dash:

  • Canada’s new tariffs add another layer of uncertainty to cross-border trade and vehicle supply chains.
  • Trump has threatened 50% tariffs on Canadian cars, trucks and automotive parts starting Jan. 1.
  • Uncertainty surrounding the USMCA could complicate sourcing, pricing and investment decisions for dealers and automakers.

Canada imposed retaliatory tariffs on about $20 billion of U.S. goods just after midnight Tuesday, deepening a trade dispute that erupted last month when negotiations between the two countries collapsed.

The new duties carry rates ranging from 15% to 50% and cover products including steel, furniture, clothing and electronics. Canadian and U.S. officials have blamed each other for the breakdown in talks, but neither government has scheduled ministerial or higher-level negotiations. Canadian officials say Ottawa remains open to a deal that benefits both economies.

Meanwhile, President Donald Trump has threatened to raise tariffs on Canadian cars, trucks and automotive parts to 50% starting Jan. 1, 2027. The potential increase could push up vehicle and parts costs across the North American market, and dealers could face additional pricing and inventory uncertainty if the automotive tariffs take effect.

USMCA uncertainty

The escalating dispute raises questions about the future of the U.S.-Mexico-Canada Agreement, with the pact now facing annual reviews after Trump declined to extend it for another decade, and Canada has relied on USMCA exemptions to keep much of its trade with the U.S. duty-free. Canada has shipped nearly 68% of its exports to the U.S. this year, and roughly 80% of those exports moved duty-free under USMCA exemptions.

New tariffs could raise costs and create broader uncertainty for investment and economic growth across North America. The dispute leaves dealers and automakers weighing sourcing, pricing and investment decisions without a clear resolution in sight.
