On the Dash:
- Jaguar’s £130,000 ($172,000) Type 01 is the first model in the brand’s new all-electric lineup.
- The grand tourer targets younger, affluent buyers, with the U.S. positioned as a key market.
- Jaguar is prioritizing limited-volume luxury EVs as JLR navigates tariffs, production disruptions and Chinese competition.
Jaguar unveiled the Type 01 in New York on Oct. 6, introducing the first model in its new fully electric lineup. The grand tourer starts at £130,000 (about $172,000), and according to the automaker, orders open in early 2027.
The launch comes nearly two years after Jaguar stopped selling new cars in the UK in November 2024 to remake itself as a low-volume, all-electric luxury brand.
The Type 01 has an expected EPA range of up to 400 miles and can add 200 miles in as little as 13 minutes with 350 kW charging. It produces up to 1,030 PS and goes from 0 to 62 mph in 3.2 seconds. Production starts in 2027 at Solihull, with drive units and batteries made in nearby Wolverhampton.

The U.S. market
While Jaguar is aiming the car at younger, wealthier buyers, it also sees the U.S. as a key market, which explains the New York unveiling. The car is more than 17 feet (5.2 meters) long, longer than a standard UK parking space. In its last full year before the transition, Jaguar sold 66,900 vehicles, about one-third of its sales after the I-Pace launched in 2018.
JLR CEO P.B. Balaji called Jaguar a vital part of the company’s growth story. Notably, Jaguar’s 2024 rebrand drew criticism before the car appeared, and early images of the Type 01 have divided critics. U.S. luxury buyers also remain skeptical of EVs. Ultimately, JLR is cutting about 4,000 jobs amid U.S. tariffs, the fallout from a cyberattack, and growing competition from Chinese automakers.
