The joint venture between General Motors (GM) and LG Energy Solution in northeast Ohio is set to restart battery cell production next week. While production had previously been halted in January due to a decline in consumer demand for EVs, Tom Gallagher, Vice President of Operations for Ultium, who confirmed the restart to Reuters, said most laid-off workers will return, bringing total employment at the facility to approximately 1,400.
In addition to the Ohio facility, GM and LG operate another joint venture battery plant in Tennessee. However, this facility has shifted its focus from producing EV batteries to manufacturing batteries for energy storage systems. This change reflects ongoing adjustments in battery production as the demand for EVs evolves.
In a related development, earlier this week, Samsung SDI acquired GM’s stake in a joint venture initially established to produce EV battery cells at a new plant currently under construction in Indiana, which indicates another shift in GM’s overall battery manufacturing strategy.
