Ford plans four-door Mustang as it looks to broaden iconic nameplate

The gas-powered Mustang variant could arrive before 2030, giving Ford a new way to reach buyers seeking performance with added practicality.

Ford plans four-door Mustang as it looks to broaden iconic nameplate

On the Dash:

  • A four-door Mustang could expand the nameplate’s customer base beyond traditional coupe buyers.
  • A hybrid powertrain could give dealers another electrified option without moving the Mustang fully electric.
  • Ford’s renewed interest in sedans could create additional product opportunities as consumers seek alternatives to SUVs.

Ford has informed its dealers that it plans to produce a four-door version of the Mustang, according to sources familiar with the company’s plans. This new model was showcased at a recent dealer event and could be launched before the end of the decade. The four-door version is reportedly similar in design to the current two-door Mustang.

Sources indicate that the four-door Mustang will feature a hybrid powertrain, with one source mentioning that Ford is considering a hybrid V8 engine. Although Ford has declined to comment on future product plans, it’s important to note that the automaker could alter the design before production begins.

Since its launch in 1964, the Mustang has remained one of Ford’s most recognizable nameplates. The company, under CEO Jim Farley, is increasingly focusing on what he describes as its most “passionate” vehicles. Notably, adding a four-door configuration would provide families and other buyers with more interior space while still maintaining the Mustang’s performance identity.

Reconsidering the sedan market

This strategy aligns with similar moves made by other performance brands that have expanded beyond traditional sports cars. Detroit automakers have largely abandoned sedans as consumer preferences have shifted towards SUVs and pickups. However, Ford is exploring ways to re-enter the sedan market while still ensuring profitability. Therefore, a four-door Mustang would enable Ford to tap into this segment while staying true to a familiar and iconic performance nameplate.

The Mustang remains the best-selling sports car in the world, despite a considerable decline in U.S. sales from its peak in 2015. In that year, Ford sold over 122,000 Mustangs in the U.S., compared to around 45,000 last year. The current lineup includes a four-cylinder coupe starting at approximately $33,000, while performance models exceed $100,000.

A four-door model could attract buyers who desire Mustang performance but need greater practicality. Notably, Chevrolet discontinued the Camaro in 2023, while Stellantis revived the Dodge Charger with both two-door and four-door options. Porsche has also expanded its product offerings, with SUVs now making up its strongest sales.

Ford’s strategy for a four-door Mustang would follow this broader industry trend while preserving the Mustang’s core identity.
