Mercedes-Benz is relocating roughly 500 corporate and technical positions, including 400 from Michigan, to Atlanta over the next 18 months as it reestablishes its North American headquarters in Georgia. The move includes a multimillion-dollar investment in a new research and development hub near Sandy Springs, about 10 miles north of Atlanta.

The company announced the shift on May 22, describing it as a strategic decision to enhance agility, accelerate speed to market, and boost customer experience.

Additionally, the move will result in the closure of the automaker’s Financial Services headquarters in Farmington Hills, Michigan. A corporate real estate team is actively seeking a new tenant for the building, which opened in 2022 and spans 200,000 square feet.

It is important to note that the impacted positions are not layoffs, and the company emphasized its intent to retain employees through relocation.

According to sources familiar with the matter, the announcement follows internal discussions dating back to last fall. After the pandemic, company leaders reassessed their real estate footprint as many employees continued working remotely, and office utilization dropped significantly, even in the newly built Farmington Hills location.

Despite the facility’s modern amenities, including a fitness center, coffee bar, and on-site restaurant, Mercedes-Benz concluded the Atlanta area offers greater long-term value, citing access to talent from the Georgia Institute of Technology and proximity to startups and tech firms. The company already employs approximately 800 workers in the region.

The shift will also consolidate financial services and corporate functions currently based in Farmington Hills with sales teams in Sandy Springs. Technical teams from other U.S. locations will move to the new R&D hub, though final details and investment figures have not been disclosed.
