The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) reported that Ford is recalling 274,000 of its SUVs across the U.S. due to a defect that increases the risk of brake function loss.
The potential defect affects the front brake line, which, due to improper installation, may come into contact with the engine air cleaner outlet pipe. The issue can result in brake fluid leaks and loss of brake function, increasing the risks of collisions.
The recall includes 223,315 Ford Expeditions and 50,474 Lincoln Navigators from the model years 2022 and 2024. The automaker estimates that only 1% of the recalled vehicles may have the defect.
Currently, there are no known accidents or injuries related to this issue. However, as of April 17, the automaker has received 45 warranty reports of front brake line leaks.
As federal law requires, Ford and Lincoln dealers will inspect the front brake line of recalled vehicles and replace it or the air cleaner outlet pipe, if necessary, free of charge.
Owner notification letters will be mailed between May 26 and May 30.
The recall comes as Ford grapples with recall issues and ongoing quality control challenges. Last year, the automaker issued over 60 recalls, making it one of the most recalled brands in the automotive industry. So far, the auto giant has already issued over 40 recalls this year, some of which include recalls for previous issues.
