Toyota reports 7.7% growth in March U.S. sales, electrified vehicles surge

This growth highlights the brand’s ongoing shift towards electrification.

Toyota Motor North America (TMNA) reported a 7.7% increase in March 2025 U.S. sales, reaching 231,335 vehicles, with electrified vehicle sales rising sharply by 44.1% to 112,608 units, making up 48.7% of total sales. This growth highlights the brand’s ongoing shift towards electrification as part of its broader strategy to meet customer demands and reduce emissions.

Quarterly Sales and Electrified Vehicle Growth

For the first quarter of 2025, the automaker’s sales reached 570,269 vehicles, up 0.9% year-over-year, with electrified vehicle sales totaling 288,796 units, an increase of 39.6%. These electrified models now account for 50.6% of total sales, reflecting strong consumer demand for Toyota’s sustainable vehicle options.

Toyota and Lexus Performance

  • Toyota Division:
    • March sales grew by 6.6%, totaling 196,240 vehicles.
    • Electrified vehicle sales surged 49.1% to 99,119 units.
    • For the first quarter, Toyota’s sales increased slightly by 0.1%, while electrified vehicle sales soared by 44.0% to 255,915 units.
    • Key performers include the Toyota Tacoma (up 177.5%) and Sienna (up 46.6%).
    • Notable vehicles: GR86, Prius, bZ4X, and Corolla Cross all posted significant gains.
  • Lexus Division:
    • March sales jumped by 14.1% to 35,095 vehicles, with electrified vehicle sales up 15.6%.
    • The first quarter saw best-ever sales for Lexus with a 5.8% increase in total sales and a 13.1% rise in electrified vehicles.
    • Lexus also saw a notable surge in sales for models like the GX (up 139.5%) and the RX PHEV (up 88.3%).

Driving Factors and Market Trends

Mark Templin, executive vice president and COO of TMNA, attributed the strong sales to improved inventory levels and the success of new models like the Toyota 4Runner and Lexus LX hybrid. Additionally, Toyota’s portfolio now includes 32 electrified vehicles, the most of any automaker, offering a wide array of options for customers seeking eco-friendly vehicles.

The company also reported having the lowest incentives among full-line manufacturers, further enhancing its competitive position in the market.

As Toyota continues to strengthen its presence in both the traditional and electrified vehicle markets, it’s poised to lead with a diverse range of models that meet consumer needs while driving sustainability.
