Honda reveals bold plans for 0 Series EV lineup, targets 750,000 sales by 2030

Utilizing advanced techniques like megacasting, Honda expects to cut production costs by 35%.
At Honda’s 0 Tech Meeting 2024, the automaker unveiled its ambitious roadmap for electrification, centered around the new 0 Series of EVs.

At Honda’s 0 Tech Meeting 2024, the automaker unveiled its ambitious roadmap for electrification, centered around the new 0 Series of electric vehicles. Built on a “thin, light, and wise” design philosophy, this lineup is set to redefine Honda’s EV strategy and stake its claim in the increasingly competitive market. The first model, inspired by the wedge-shaped Saloon concept shown at CES 2024, will lead the charge.

Honda’s current EV lineup, with the Prologue as its flagship, has struggled to keep pace with rivals. The Prologue, built on GM’s platform, offers decent range and space, but it isn’t enough to position Honda as a serious contender. To address this, Honda plans to launch seven 0 Series models globally by 2030, with five of them being crossovers. The company also aims to sell 750,000 EVs in North America by the end of the decade, with production set to begin in Ohio in 2025. Utilizing advanced techniques like megacasting, the automaker expects to cut production costs by 35%.

The “thin” aspect of the 0 Series refers to design elements such as short overhangs, a low overall height, and increased cabin space—a balance rarely achieved in modern EVs, where battery packs often take up significant space. Honda’s commitment to improving the vehicle’s packaging extends to reducing the size of key components, such as a new inverter that’s 40% smaller and a battery casing that’s 6% thinner, integrated directly into the vehicle’s body for structural integrity.

In terms of “light,” Honda aims to enhance both the driving experience and energy efficiency. The new EV platform supports a sporty yet efficient vehicle design, with innovations like steer-by-wire technology, a lighter e-axle, and active aerodynamics to reduce drag and boost range. The company believes these efforts will result in more agile, high-performance vehicles that maintain excellent efficiency.

The “wise” element of Honda’s philosophy is all about integrating intelligence and adaptability into the driving experience. Honda will develop its own operating system (OS) for the 0 Series, designed to enhance connected technologies and offer smarter mobility solutions. The 0 Series will feature Level 3 autonomous driving, allowing for “eyes-off” capabilities under certain conditions, competing with Tesla’s self-driving systems. Additionally, over-the-air (OTA) updates will continuously improve each vehicle’s performance, making the 0 Series a dynamic product that evolves long after purchase.

Honda’s first 0 Series model will debut at CES 2025, embodying the cutting-edge technologies and design principles outlined at the 0 Tech Meeting. While the full potential of these innovations remains to be seen, the company’s ambitious goals place it on a path toward becoming a key player in the EV market.
