Apple’s iOS 18 brings major updates to CarPlay

As automakers develop their own solutions, these updates may inspire further innovation in the automotive software space, keeping Apple ahead of the curve.
Apple’s latest mobile operating system, iOS 18, launched on Monday, introduces new features for both iPhones and Apple CarPlay.

Apple’s latest mobile operating system, iOS 18, launched on Monday, introduces new features for both iPhones and Apple CarPlay. Among the most significant updates are improvements to Siri and accessibility, designed to enhance the CarPlay experience for drivers.

CarPlay now includes new Siri animations, which indicate when the voice assistant is actively listening by pulsing the screen’s border—a feature similar to what’s available on newer iPhones. The next update (iOS 18.1) will introduce even more advanced Siri functionality, powered by Apple’s latest artificial intelligence system, Apple Intelligence. These features will allow Siri to process more natural language and perform more complex tasks across a user’s apps.

Accessibility improvements are another key focus of iOS 18’s CarPlay update. The system now supports color filters for those with color blindness, bold text, and voice control, which allows users to navigate CarPlay without touching the screen. A new “Sound Recognition” feature can detect car horns and sirens, alerting drivers to potential hazards. Additionally, the redesigned Messages app now displays contact photos alongside names, making identifying contacts at a glance easier.

For personalization, CarPlay introduces more wallpaper options, although users are still unable to set custom backgrounds. A new Find My feature lets drivers locate lost devices directly from the CarPlay interface—whether the phone is hidden under a car seat or misplaced elsewhere.

These updates come as many automakers, including Rivian, Tesla, and General Motors, move away from CarPlay in favor of developing their own in-car software systems, often tied to subscription-based services. Despite this shift, Apple continues to innovate, maintaining a loyal user base of drivers who rely on CarPlay for its seamless integration with iOS devices. For many, CarPlay remains a must-have feature, particularly as manufacturers struggle to match Apple’s intuitive user experience.

By releasing new features and improving functionality, Apple continues to set a high bar for in-car technology. As automakers develop their own solutions, these updates may inspire further innovation in the automotive software space, keeping Apple ahead of the curve—at least for now.
