Trump touts U.S. auto manufacturing during visit to Michigan

The President visits the Michigan proving grounds to promote auto investment and reshoring efforts amid ongoing trade tensions and inflation.

Trump touts U.S. auto manufacturing during visit to Michigan

On the Dash:

  • President Donald Trump will visit GM’s Milford Proving Ground to highlight his administration’s manufacturing and trade agenda.
  • GM confirms CEO Mary Barra will attend as the automaker expands U.S. production and shifts some manufacturing from Mexico.
  • The visit comes as tariffs, inflation and geopolitical tensions continue to shape the auto industry’s outlook.

President Donald Trump will visit General Motors’ Milford Proving Ground in Michigan today to promote his administration’s trade and manufacturing policies ahead of Michigan’s August 4 primary election and the broader midterm campaign. The administration claims that Trump’s “America First” agenda has encouraged automakers to expand manufacturing and hiring within the U.S.

The White House plans to highlight recent investments in factories and the growth of domestic production during this visit. GM confirms CEO Mary Barra will attend the event, where the company will announce it is shifting production of the Chevrolet Blazer from Mexico to the United States. Additionally, GM is increasing domestic production of the Chevrolet Equinox.

Recently, GM raised its profit forecast for 2026 for the second time this year, attributing this to ongoing demand for pickups and SUVs. This visit comes as Trump aims to refocus attention on the economy ahead of Michigan’s primary, amidst challenges such as inflation, rising gasoline prices, and tensions related to the Iran conflict that are affecting consumer confidence.

Industry impact

Notably, the polls in Michigan indicate declining approval ratings for Trump’s handling of the economy and trade, with one recent survey putting his approval at just 33%.

In terms of industry implications, automakers are continually adjusting their long-term manufacturing strategies due to tariffs, changing emissions policies, and shifting demand for EVs. GM has restructured parts of its EV business while maintaining strong performance in its truck and SUV segments.

Trump’s appearance in Michigan highlights the increasing importance of automotive manufacturing policy in both the administration’s economic agenda and the upcoming midterm campaign.
