- Mitsubishi is recalling 91,697 Outlanders and Outlander PHEVs.
- The coating on the steel tailgate gas spring cylinder may corrode over time, causing the lift gate to fall unexpectedly or the cylinder to rupture, increasing the risk of injury.
- The NHTSA recall number is 25V507, and Mitsubishi’s recall number is SR-25-002.
Mitsubishi Motors is recalling 91,697 Outlander and Outlander hybrid SUVS in the United States due to corrosion of the cylinder of the tailgate gas spring, the U.S. National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) announced Thursday. The corrosion could cause the rear lift gate to fall unexpectedly or the tailgate gas spring to rupture, increasing the risk of injuries.
The recall affects 85,630 Outlanders from model years 2014 to 2020 and 6,077 Outlander PHEVs from model years 2018 to 2022.
The cylinder of the tailgate gas spring, which holds high-pressure gas, is covered with a heat-shrink resin tube to prevent corrosion. However, if saltwater seeps in and collects beneath the spring’s dust cap, it can lead to corrosion over time. If significant degradation occurs, the cylinder wall may thin, causing the gas spring to lose pressure. This could result in the lift gate falling unexpectedly or the gas spring cylinder rupturing, which could cause injury.
Mitsubishi estimates that roughly 1% of the recalled vehicles are affected by the defect.
The NHTSA recall number is 25V507, and the manufacturer’s is SR-25-002. Dealers will be formally notified about the recall on Oct. 1, and owner notifications will begin on Oct. 6. Â
Dealers will replace the left and right tailgate gas springs at no cost to consumers. The steel cylinder of the tailgate gas springs will be treated with an anti-corrosion coating to prevent deterioration.
