Michigan Ford dealer launches autonomous drone parts delivery program

On August 25, Jack Demmer Automotive Group launched live commercial drone operations for automotive parts in Southeast Michigan, moving the program from pilot testing into full-scale operations across Metro Detroit. The dealership group built the network in partnership with drone technology companies blueflite and Airspace Link, with support from Centrepolis Accelerator, following a series of successful test flights earlier this year.

The initiative is influential for dealers since parts availability and delivery times directly impact repair cycle times and customer satisfaction. While the system is designed to alleviate traffic congestion and workforce shortages that can delay parts deliveries, using drones to transport parts through the air rather than navigating congested roadways makes the process more efficient. Notably, the initial operating radius extends 12 miles from Jack Demmer Ford dealerships and focuses on high-demand parts, making it especially relevant for time-sensitive service repairs.

Additionally, the project received a $740,000 grant from Michigan’s Advanced Air Mobility Activation Fund, which involves collaboration with the Michigan Department of Transportation, the Michigan Aeronautics Commission, the Office of Future Mobility and Electrification, and the Michigan Economic Development Corporation. This project exemplifies how public funding can support emerging technology in real-world dealership operations, moving beyond laboratory testing alone.

According to the joint media release, blueflite plans to provide an autonomous tiltrotor drone platform for transporting parts, designed for long-range autonomous flight, precision navigation, and flexible payload configurations. Meanwhile, Airspace Link will supply the digital infrastructure through its AirHub platform, ensuring airspace coordination, operational oversight, and safety compliance.

Mark Hatfield, the Parts Manager at Jack Demmer, emphasized that the program aims to move critical parts more quickly, reduce repair delays, and enhance overall efficiency. Hatfield said in the company’s media release, “This groundbreaking program allows us to move critical parts faster than ever before, helping reduce repair delays, improve efficiency, and get our customers back on the road sooner.”

While sources have yet to provide measured results regarding reductions in delivery times, repair cycle times, or costs, the project is anticipated to generate operational data that could inform regulatory policies and encourage broader adoption of drone logistics. The partners see the Metro Detroit implementation as a model that could eventually be scaled across the automotive industry.

Ultimately, the most crucial question for dealers will be whether autonomous delivery can deliver measurable improvements in parts availability, technician productivity, and repair-order cycle times.
