Kia surpasses all-time annual record with best-ever November sales

With one month left in 2023, Kia has sold 722,176 vehicles, breaking its previous record for total annual U.S. sales in less than 11 months.
With one month left in 2023, Kia sold 722,176 vehicles, breaking its previous record for total annual U.S. sales in less than 11 months.

Kia reported its best-ever November with 58,338 unit sales, up 3% from the same period last year. With one month left in 2023, Kia sold 722,176 vehicles, breaking its previous record for total annual U.S. sales in less than 11 months. This record also marks the brand’s 16th consecutive month of year-over-year sales gain.

Due to the high demand for the Forte, Sportage, and Telluride, Kia surpassed its previous sales records. All three models have sold over 100,000 units so far this year, with the Sorento following closely behind.

Together with the monthly sales figures, the automaker also revealed several initiatives, such as:

  • The North American Car of the Year (NACTOY) jury selected the all-electric EV9 as a finalist for the 2024 North American Utility Vehicle of the Year. After being evaluated by 50 impartial jurors, the EV9 was also selected as one of the three finalists. The winners of NACOTY will be revealed on January 4, 2024.
  • Kia partnered with St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital to launch the brand’s “Season of Giving Back” year-end sales promotion for the second year running. For each new model sold or leased at an accredited Kia dealership in the U.S. between November 16 and January 2, Kia will make a donation to St. Jude.
  • The 2023 Telluride SUV was recognized by the Hispanic Motor Press with the organization’s “Family Vehicle of the Year” Award. The award was presented at the Los Angeles Auto show and was decided on by a panel of over 20 Hispanic automotive journalists, content creators, and industry influencers. In 2022, Telluride was named “SUV of the Year” by the Hispanic Motor Press, marking this year as a back-to-back win for Kia’s award-winning three-row SUV.

“Demand for Kia vehicles continues at an all-time high, and beating our previous annual sales record in less than 11 months demonstrates the power of the Kia brand,” stated Kia America’s vice president of sales operations, Eric Watson.

Thanks to models like the EV9 and facelifted Sorento, Watson also noted that “new customers are shopping Kia like never before” and that their “winning streak” should continue into the new year.

Stellantis to prioritize four core brands in turnaround strategy, sources say The automaker plans to shift funding toward Jeep, Ram, Peugeot, and Fiat while maintaining its broader portfolio. On the Dash: Expect increased product investment and marketing support for Jeep, Ram, Peugeot and Fiat. Regional and niche brands may see reduced volume but more targeted positioning and shared platforms. Platform-sharing and rebadging strategies could affect inventory mix and model differentiation. Stellantis will concentrate most of its investment on four core brands as CEO Antonio Filosa pushes a turnaround strategy set for release May 21, according to a Reuters exclusive. The automaker has identified Jeep, Ram, Peugeot, and Fiat as its priority brands. It will allocate a “material increase” in funding to them, driven by their stronger global sales and profitability, marking a shift away from the company’s previous approach of distributing investment more evenly across its portfolio. Stellantis will retain its 14-brand lineup, the largest in the industry, and will not shut down underperforming marques. Instead, the company will reposition secondary brands such as Citroën, Opel and Alfa Romeo to operate in regional or niche roles. These brands will rely on shared platforms and technology developed by the core brands while maintaining distinct styling and market identity. The strategy comes as Stellantis works to regain market share in the United States and Europe while facing growing competition from Chinese EV makers. The company earlier reported a 22.2 billion-euro charge tied to scaling back its EV plans, underscoring the urgency of the strategic shift. Its market valuation has also declined significantly in recent months. To support the transition, Stellantis will expand its use of shared “multi-energy” platforms that support electric, hybrid and internal combustion (ICE) vehicles. Additionally, the company is evaluating rebadging strategies and joint development programs, including collaborations with its Chinese partner, Leapmotor. Executives and investors backing the plan expect the increased focus on core brands to improve efficiency and strengthen financial performance. Analysts say Stellantis could still consider further consolidation if results fall short of expectations.
