International automakers grow U.S. economic footprint 58%, new report says

International nameplate automakers accounted for 58% of U.S. new-vehicle sales and more than half of dealership employment in 2025, according to the latest AIADA economic report.

According to the 2026 Economic Impact Report from the American International Automobile Dealership Association (AIADA) and Autos Drive America, international automakers expanded their presence in the U.S. automotive market in 2025, accounting for the majority of new-vehicle sales, dealership employment, and sales of electrified vehicles.

“International nameplate dealerships are woven into the fabric of communities across America,” said Cody Lusk, AIADA President and CEO, in the agency’s media release.

The report revealed that international automakers captured 58% of all new vehicle sales in the U.S., which equates to 9.4 million vehicles sold nationwide in 2025. These brands led sales in 37 states and Washington, D.C., emphasizing their increasing significance in the retail automotive market.

Economic impact

In terms of economic contributions, the number of international nameplate dealerships reached 9,375 franchises, directly employing 570,042 individuals and supporting an additional 605,000 indirect jobs. Collectively, dealership payroll in 2025 amounted to $49 billion, showcasing the industry’s substantial economic impact on local communities.

International automakers also continued to dominate the electrified vehicle market, capturing 72% of electrified vehicle sales and 91% of hybrid sales, while offering consumers 196 electrified models. The report highlighted that international brands are consistently expanding vehicle options as consumer demand for electrified vehicles rises.

California led the nation with 73,870 employees within dealerships, followed by Florida with 53,675 and Texas with 50,660. Additionally, California recorded the highest market share for international brands among major states, representing 68% of new vehicle sales.
