On the Dash:

  • Ferrari’s first production EV sold for $40 million, about 62 times its sticker price
  • Buyer Herbert Wertheim also paid $26 million for a Tailor Made Daytona SP3 last year
  • Despite backlash at launch, Ferrari’s full 2026 Luce allocation sold out within two months

The first production Ferrari Luce sold for $40 million Saturday night at RM Sotheby’s Monterey Car Week auction. Ferrari‘s first EV, identified as Chassis 0, crossed the block with no reserve and no buyer’s premium. RM Sotheby’s had estimated the car’s value at “in excess of $1.1 million.”

A standard Luce carries a base price around $640,000. That means the winning bid was about 62 times the sticker price. All proceeds from the sale benefit The Ferrari Foundation, a charity that funds educational initiatives.

DuPont Registry identified the buyer as Dr. Herbert “Herbie” Wertheim, a billionaire businessman, inventor and philanthropist. Wertheim previously made headlines at the same Monterey sale a year earlier, paying $26 million for a Tailor Made Ferrari Daytona SP3, chassis “599+1,” finished in a two-tone carbon-fiber and Giallo Modena livery. That sale also benefited the Ferrari Foundation.

Notably, Wertheim will not immediately take possession. The vehicle will go back to Maranello, Italy, for final assembly, with plans for delivery in the first quarter of 2027.

The car came through Ferrari’s Tailor Made program, which lets customers commission bespoke specifications through the automaker’s design studio. Chassis 0’s exterior uses a one-off Madreperla Semi-Gloss finish that shifts from green to violet depending on the light. The interior is trimmed in Le Mans metallic leather in Perla, with Grigio Corvara accents on secondary trim pieces that are normally black. Ferrari says that’s the first time the color has replaced black on a Luce interior. The car also gets dedicated wheels, bespoke brake calipers and a Ferrari badge set against an optical white background.

Ferrari unveiled the Luce at an event in Rome earlier this year.  The launch drew a mixed reception, with former Ferrari Chairman Luca di Montezemolo saying the badge didn’t belong on the car, and Ferrari’s stock dropped after the Rome reveal. The company replaced its marketing chief the following month.

Despite the backlash, Ferrari’s full 2026 Luce allocation of just under 500 cars sold out within two months before a single car was delivered.
