Apple Maps will power navigation in Ford’s Universal Electric Vehicle Platform (UEV) starting in 2027, replacing the automaker’s own mapping software
Apple and Ford announced the partnership Thursday. The integration arrives with Ford’s first UEV Platform vehicle, a midsize electric pickup priced around $30,000 and set to launch from the retooled Louisville Assembly Plant next year.
MapKit for Automotive lets Ford embed Apple Maps directly into the vehicle’s displays and match it to their own interface. Drivers won’t need to connect a phone to use it. CarPlay will still be available separately.
The system covers turn-by-turn directions with natural language search, real-time traffic and incident alerts, detailed place cards, and route options. UEV drivers also get EV-specific routing, including battery preconditioning ahead of DC fast charging stops. Ford will pull road-level data from Apple Maps to support its next-generation BlueCruise hands-free highway system, and its Latitude AI unit will use the same data set.
Apple says the arrangement follows its standard privacy approach. The company does not collect location or activity data tied back to an individual driver.
“Apple Maps delivers the best map experience in the world, and we’re excited to bring the power of Maps’ navigation technology to Ford’s innovative Universal Electric Vehicle Platform,” said Eddy Cue, Apple’s Senior Vice President of Services and Health in the company’s media release.
“Our new midsize electric vehicle will be priced around $30,000 and redefines what advanced technology can be — simple, useful, and truly attainable for more customers,” Ford CEO Jim Farley said in a statement. “We’re proud to embed Apple Maps’ navigation and mapping technology directly into our Universal Electric Vehicle Platform.”
For dealers, the deal adds another differentiator to a vehicle already positioned against Tesla and Chinese EV pricing. The UEV Platform was built around fewer parts to hit its price target, and mapping with EV-specific routing gives sales staff one more concrete feature to point to.
