Toyota teases new EV concept car ahead of Japan Mobility Show

Apart from its revolutionary outward design and zero-emission powertrain, the car also boasts a new interior unrelated to the GR86 and Supra.
At the Japan Mobility Show later this month (Oct. 26-Nov. 5), Toyota intends to give a sneak peek into its upcoming electric sports car.

At the Japan Mobility Show later this month, Toyota intends to give a sneak peek into its upcoming sports car. However, the initial teasers reveal a coupe with a futuristic appearance that is entirely different from the current generation GR86 or Supra. It appears to be an enhancement of the Sports EV concept- one similar in shape, with a black roof and an orange body. It could also be a closer-to-production variation.

Moreover, the “FT-Se” electric sports coupe is covered in several Gazoo Racing insignia both on the exterior and interior. The black and red “GR” emblem with a white font replaced the three ovals on the back, so the Toyota logo isn’t present.

Although the Japanese carmaker keeps those letters’ meanings a secret, we know from previous models that “FT” stands for “Future Toyota.” For those who may not remember, the 2014 FT-1 evolved into the 2020 Supra. Furthermore, S” is for “sport” and “e” is electric.

Apart from its revolutionary outward design and zero-emission powertrain, the car also boasts a new interior unrelated to the GR86 and Supra. The digital instrument cluster is above the steering wheel level, with the infotainment on the right and another screen on the left. Although they are not yet visible, Toyota claims that the idea has improved kneepads that “protect the body from G-forces during driving.”

It’s too soon to tell if Toyota plans to release a follow-up production model in the future. However, it may happen since company chairman Akio Toyoda strongly suggested just last week there are plans to revive the Celica. Not to mention, there are persistent whispers about a new MR2.
