Next-generation Chevrolet Bolt to return with significant upgrades

The Chevrolet Bolt will expand the brand's roster of all-electric vehicles, including the Silverado EV, Blazer EV, and Equinox EV.
CEO Mary Barra has confirmed that a next-generation version of the Chevrolet Bolt is in the works. Barra says the upcoming Bolt EV will be based on GM's Ultium battery and drive technology and will continue to deliver what customers have come to expect: affordability, range, and technology.

CEO Mary Barra has confirmed that a next-generation version of the Chevrolet Bolt is in the works. Barra says the upcoming Bolt EV will be based on GM’s Ultium battery and drive technology and will continue to deliver what customers have come to expect: affordability, range, and technology.

Using multiple Ultium and Ultifi technological advances will enable GM to bring the well-liked model back “on an accelerated timeline.” However, the manufacturer did not offer a debut date, stating, “The date and specifics for the next Bolt would be revealed later.”

The new badge for the nameplate, which features stylized letters and a lightning bolt on the letter “O,” is visible on the tailgate of the next-generation Bolt in a teaser image published by the manufacturer. The stamped panel’s form also reveals the shape of the taillight, and it appears that the next Bolt will have lower-set horizontal rear lamps.

Additionally, the next Chevrolet Bolt will expand the brand’s roster of all-electric vehicles, including three models on sale this year: the Silverado EV, Blazer EV, and Equinox EV.

Following Barra’s indication last month, during a podcast appearance on NPR’s Marketplace, she said:

“The Bolt has built a lot of loyalty and equity. But I can’t say more because I don’t discuss future product programs. However, it was primarily a transition from the second to the third generation. Though that’s a significant vehicle in our fleet.”

The Ultium platform reduces battery prices by 40% compared to the second-generation battery used in the outgoing Bolt EV and EUV. This suggests the company could deliver the following Bolt for under $30,000 as a starting MSRP. Therefore, the Equinox EV, which is expected to begin at roughly $30K, would be undercut by the Bolt.
