Honda reveals first Acura EV, equipped with built-in Google apps

Google announced earlier this year that it would add more services, like YouTube, Waze, and Zoom, to cars with Android integration.

Honda’s next Acura model, the 2024 ZDX, is set to be the brand’s first electric vehicle. The EV will feature Google’s built-in integrations while also enabling native Android apps and over-the-air (OTA) software updates.

The next SUV from the performance brand will include Google Assistant, Google Maps, and other apps found on Google Play. Every ZDX trim level will consist of Google’s native integration as a standard feature.

It’s important to note that the company uses Google’s built-in branding for cars that support Google Automotive Services. Google apps and services are directly integrated into the vehicles. This distinguishes it from Android Auto, which merely mirrors your phone’s contents onto your car’s infotainment system. It differs from Android Automotive OS, where Android also runs the complete operating system.

According to Honda, an “enhanced version” of Google Maps will provide Acura ZDX drivers with “optimized route planning for recharging and finding charging stations along the way to minimize travel time.” The carmaker claims that Google Maps may precondition the EV battery when the destination is a DC Fast charging station and will estimate the time needed to charge to get there.

Along with the 2024 Honda Civic, the ZDX will have native versions of popular Google Apps, like Maps, Assistant, and Play.

On the other hand, thanks to cooperation with the Detroit-based carmaker, both of the automaker’s first EVs, the Acura ZDX and Honda Prologue, will be constructed on GM’s Ultium electric architecture. Honda is assisting Sony with establishing its first auto brand, Afeela, the first model of which is anticipated to hit North American dealerships in 2026.

Ultimately, Google announced earlier this year that it would add more services, like YouTube, Waze, and Zoom, to cars with Android integration.
