Electric, hydrogen-powered, or plug-in hybrid vehicles (PHEVs) are considered zero-emissions vehicles (ZEVs), and automakers sold 345,818 of them in California in 2022. Which represents an increase of 138% over 2020 and 38% over 2021.

ZEVs make up almost 19% of all vehicles sold in California last year, with 40% accounting for all ZEV sales nationwide, including hybrid vehicles, according to showed data. President Joe Biden has urged that by 2030, PHEVs will account for 50% of all new car sales.

The plan to phase out vehicles that solely operate on gasoline by 2035 was initially revealed by California Governor Gavin Newsom in September 2020. Last year, the state sought to demand that all new vehicles sold in the state by 2035 be PHEVs or entirely electric.

In 2021, 12% of the vehicles sold in California were ZEVs.

According to a statistic compiled by the California Energy Commission, around 346,000 ZEVs were sold in 2022, with Tesla’s Model 3 taking the top spot with roughly 95,000 units sold in the state.

Although roughly 51,000 plug-in hybrid EVs were purchased by Californians in 2022, there were about 80,000 EV chargers installed. Additionally, in 2022, sales of battery-electric vehicles with a range of at least 200 miles reached about 286,000.

In December, California proposed a $2.9 billion investment plan to increase ZEV sales. It will accelerate the development of the state’s infrastructure for electric charging and hydrogen refueling. The California Air Resources Board approved investments totaling $2.6 billion in November to promote ZEV projects all around the state, with 70% of the money going to low-income areas. Additionally, buyers will soon take advantage of increased federal tax benefits.
