Chrysler recalls 280,000 Ram trucks over potential fire hazard

Chrysler has issued the latest of several recalls this year, affecting 280,000 Ram trucks. The recall was filed with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration this Thursday, as the company informed the public on its website. The vehicles are reportedly a fire hazard, and dangerous to drive until fixed.

Chrysler, owned by Stellantis, listed the 2020-2023 Ram 2500 and 2020-2022 Ram 3500 diesel trucks in their statement. This comes in response to multiple reports the company has received of vehicles catching fire, although there are no casualties as of yet. The heavy-duty trucks are used worldwide, although the U.S. is the most affected. The recall is the second Chrysler has deployed in recent weeks, after issuing a “Do Not Drive” warning to some Takata drivers due to faulty airbags. However, recalls are quite common in the industry, with companies like Tesla experiencing as many as four in two months. In 2016 the auto industry lost over $22 billion due to recalls and faulty products. GM is the current record holder for the highest number of recalls since 2000.

The transmission is the suspected culprit, as the fluid can leak and ignite if under too much pressure. A solution to the issue is under development. According to the statement released by the automaker, drivers should monitor for a warning light, as this could indicate the transmission is at risk of igniting. Those who notice the light can contact their dealers to determine the next steps.

If consumers are unsure if their vehicle is part of this or other recalls, Chrysler’s website has a form to assist them. The web page will require the VIN of their vehicle to provide information. Owners can also go to the NHTSA’s website as an alternative.
