Tesla is recalling over 40,000 Model S and Model X vehicles from 2017-2021 because vehicles may experience a loss of power steering assist when driving on rough roads or after hitting a pothole.
The electric vehicle manufacturer has released an over-the-air software update to recalibrate the system following a previous update released on October 11 designed to detect unexpected steering better. Tesla said more than 97% of the recalled vehicles had installed an update that addressed the problem as of November 1.
The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration said a loss of power steering assist could increase crash risks and requires a greater steering effort from drivers, especially when traveling at low speeds.
Tesla said it received 314 vehicle alerts among US vehicles related to the recall but is unaware of any injuries or deaths related to the issue.
A separate recall involves exterior side rearview mirrors on 53 2021 Model S vehicles. The mirrors installed during US service visits were built for the European market and did not comply with US “rear visibility” requirements.
So far in 2022, Tesla has issued 17 recall campaigns affecting 3.4 million vehicles.
