Dealerships should hire more female salespeople

To the Editor:

When I think of buying or leasing a new vehicle, I imagine showing up to a dealership and being approached by one or more male salespeople hoping they can successfully sell me before I leave the lot. I read the article 10 best practices to hire and retain female employees at your car dealership which says that diversity leads to stronger business results, so why aren’t dealerships trying to hire more women for sales?

I am a female, but I am not a so-called “activist” and I’m not going to picket about gender equality in the workplace, but hiring more women might be beneficial for dealerships. It’s no secret that consumers – especially females – don’t trust car salespeople, but female customers might be more comfortable with a female salesperson, like girl code.

Also, like it or not, women may even be slightly better at sales than men. Women are known to listen much more than men, and are more empathetic. One of my friends works in sales in a male-dominated industry and she works extra hard because women are now more determined to succeed. Dealerships should push for more female employees, what do they have to lose?
