2025 Nissan Murano Platinum: A modern reset for a critical segment

The two-row midsize SUV market is one of the most competitive categories in the entire automotive industry, and Nissan understands that the Murano needs to remain relevant if it wants to retain a meaningful share of this segment. That urgency is clear in the 2025 redesign, which brings noticeable improvements to the driving experience, cabin quality, and technology. After spending time with the Platinum trim, it is evident that Nissan has invested in the right areas, but the question remains whether these upgrades are enough to push the Murano to the front of the pack.

The most substantial change for 2025 is the powertrain. Nissan has replaced the long-standing V6 with a turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine that produces 241 horsepower and is paired with a nine-speed automatic transmission. Buyers can choose either front-wheel drive or all-wheel drive. Acceleration is measured at 7.2 seconds from zero to sixty miles per hour, positioning the Murano comfortably within the expectations for this class, although not exceeding them. The combined fuel-economy rating of 23 miles per gallon does not represent a significant improvement over the previous generation, and this will be an area where some consumers may hesitate, especially as competitors increase their hybrid and electrified offerings.

Despite the minimal fuel-economy gains, handling has improved. Steering response feels more direct, body control has been tightened, and the overall ride quality is more composed than before. The Murano remains a comfortable daily driver, but it now offers better road feedback and stability, giving it a more confident feel in a variety of conditions. The towing capacity remains at 1,500 pounds, which is sufficient for small trailers but not ideal for buyers who need extensive utility capability.

Safety continues to be a core focus for Nissan, and the 2025 Murano reflects that emphasis. Every model includes a comprehensive suite of driver-assistance technology. Standard equipment now includes automated emergency braking with pedestrian detection, lane-departure warning with lane-keeping assist, and adaptive cruise control with a hands-free driving mode, Nissan’s ProPilot Assist technology, and a 360-degree exterior camera system. For families and commuters who rank safety as a top priority, this level of standard protection adds significant value and helps the Murano stand out in a price-sensitive segment.

Interior comfort has always been one of the Murano’s strongest attributes, and the redesigned cabin enhances that reputation.

Nissan continues to use its Zero Gravity seat design in both the front and rear rows, helping reduce fatigue and supporting occupants on longer drives. The Platinum trim elevates the interior even further by adding semi-aniline leather upholstery, massaging front seats, and memory settings. These upgrades give the vehicle a high-end feel that is competitive with some luxury-brand features at a more accessible price point. Cargo space is practical, offering 33 cubic feet with the rear seats in place and 64 cubic feet when they are folded flat, making the Murano versatile enough for family trips, daily errands, and light-duty hauling.

Technology has been significantly modernized. The Murano now features dual 12.3-inch color displays for infotainment and the digital gauge cluster, creating a cleaner and more cohesive user interface. Apple CarPlay and Android Auto are included, along with in-dash navigation, ambient lighting, active sound canceling, four USB-C ports, wireless smartphone charging, Amazon Alexa integration, and an available Wi-Fi hotspot. The available ten-speaker Bose premium audio system adds another layer of refinement, while the standard six-speaker system provides adequate performance for most drivers. The updated infotainment menus are more intuitive, and the new graphics improve visibility and ease of use.

On the outside, the Murano is available in SV, SL, and Platinum trims. Each level includes additional comfort, convenience, and design enhancements. Heated exterior mirrors, a panoramic roof, and tinted windows contribute to a more upscale appearance, while improved materials and assembly quality help the Murano feel more durable and cohesive than before. Nissan continues to offer a three-year, 36,000-mile basic warranty along with a five-year, 60,000-mile powertrain warranty. The brand also includes complimentary maintenance for two years or 24,000 miles, which strengthens the overall value proposition.

Pricing for the 2025 Murano ranges from $41,965 to $51,095, with the fully equipped test model priced at $54,250. While this places the Platinum trim in the upper range of the segment, the level of equipment, safety technology, and interior quality helps justify the cost. The primary drawbacks remain the absence of a hybrid powertrain, modest towing capability, and performance that does not exceed that of the most athletic competitors.

The Murano competes in a crowded field that includes models such as the Genesis GV70, Toyota Highlander, Honda Passport, Kia Sorento, Ford Bronco, Hyundai Santa Fe, Chevrolet Blazer, Mazda CX-70, Volkswagen Atlas, Jeep Grand Cherokee, and Subaru Outback. Within this group, the Murano distinguishes itself through comfort, safety technology, interior refinement, and value-focused packaging. It does not lead in power or efficiency, but it offers a compelling set of features that appeal to buyers who prioritize everyday comfort and premium amenities at a reasonable price.

The 2025 Nissan Murano Platinum represents a significant and necessary update that brings the model back into meaningful competition. Nissan’s improvements to the interior, ride quality, and technology show an understanding of what midsize SUV buyers want today. If Nissan eventually adds a hybrid or more advanced fuel-efficient option, the Murano could move even higher within the segment. For now, it remains a well-rounded, comfortable, and feature-rich SUV that deserves a closer look from shoppers who value quality and practicality without stepping into luxury pricing.
