Stellantis recalls over 200,000 SUVs and trucks due to stability control system malfunction

Car manufacturer Stellantis is recalling 211,581 SUVs and pickup trucks due to a software malfunction that may cause the electronic stability control (ESC) systems to fail. The issue originates from a defective anti-lock braking system, which subsequently deactivates the stability control system. The ESC is a critical safety feature that helps maintain steering control in emergencies, such as on icy or flooded roads.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) warned that using a vehicle with a disabled stability system could increase the likelihood of a crash. Research has shown that ESC systems significantly reduce fatal collisions, particularly single-vehicle and rollover crashes. Since 2012, the NHTSA has required all new passenger cars to include an ESC system.

The recall affects the 2022 Dodge Durango, and the 2022 Ram 2500 and 3500 models. The Ram 2500 is the most affected, with nearly 158,000 pickups recalled, followed by over 53,000 Durangos and 524 Ram 3500s.

Stellantis will start notifying affected vehicle owners in late July. Customers will be able to bring their vehicles to dealerships for a free update to the anti-lock braking system software.
