GM rolls out Apple Music into new vehicles as CarPlay exit continues

As vehicles become more software-defined, GM is positioning native apps like Apple Music as a core part of its digital ecosystem rather than an optional phone-based feature.

  • GM has begun rolling out Apple Music natively in select 2025 and newer Chevrolet and Cadillac vehicles.
  • Streaming is included at no additional cost through OnStar Basics for up to eight years.
  • Cadillac models gain studio-grade Spatial Audio with Dolby Atmos through native integration.

General Motors has begun rolling out Apple Music as a native app in select 2025 and newer Chevrolet and Cadillac vehicles, marking a significant expansion of built-in infotainment features as the automaker continues its shift away from Apple CarPlay. The update, delivered via over-the-air software, allows drivers to stream Apple Music directly through GM’s in-vehicle system using standard OnStar connectivity.

The rollout begins this week in the United States and Canada and will expand to additional GM brands, including Buick and GMC, in future updates. Apple Music is integrated directly into GM’s software platform, enabling faster startup, voice control, and deeper interaction with vehicle hardware than phone-based projection systems.

As part of the launch, GM is including audio streaming at no additional cost through OnStar Basics for all 2025 and newer vehicles. The service includes built-in connectivity to music, podcasts, audiobooks, and news apps for up to 8 years from the date of purchase.

Cadillac vehicles equipped with premium audio systems will also gain access to Apple Music’s Spatial Audio library using Dolby Atmos technology. The feature delivers a three-dimensional sound experience calibrated to each vehicle’s cabin. Models such as the Cadillac Vistiq use multi-speaker AKG audio systems that place instruments and vocals throughout the interior rather than in traditional left-right stereo channels.

The initial vehicle lineup includes the 2025 and 2026 Cadillac CT5, Escalade IQ, and Vistiq, along with the 2025 and 2026 Chevrolet Blazer EV, Equinox EV, Silverado EV, Corvette, Tahoe, and Suburban. Additional models, including the next-generation Chevrolet Bolt, are scheduled to receive the app in future model years.

The Apple Music integration follows GM’s decision to phase out Apple CarPlay beginning in 2023, a move that sparked consumer backlash but aligned with the automaker’s long-term software strategy. By embedding apps directly into its operating system, GM aims to maintain greater control over user experience, vehicle functions, and over-the-air updates.
