Honda has named its next-generation hybrid system Honda Hybrid, with global rollout starting in 2027. It plans 15 Honda Hybrid models by March 31, 2030, primarily in North America. The automaker posted its first annual loss in May, driven by about $10 billion in EV write-downs. In July, Honda told dealers it would end Prologue sales after the 2026 model year.
Honda Hybrid builds on e:HEV
Honda Hybrid advances key components of e:HEV, the company’s two-motor hybrid system. Honda is expanding the engine’s high-efficiency operating range and improving drive unit efficiency and size. The models will use a new platform that balances rigidity and weight reduction. Honda said its rigidity management makes the body feel like it flexes in corners, improving roadholding.
The automaker also plans electric all-wheel drive (e-AWD) and a Motion Management System, its own integrated control technology.
Civic Sport-L brings hybrid features to a gas model
The new Civic Sport-L brings leather, power-adjustable and heated front seats, and dual-zone climate control to a non-hybrid model. Those features were previously limited to hybrid trims. Sport-L slots between the Civic Sport and Sport Hybrid with a 2.0-liter engine. The Sedan starts at $28,495 and the Hatchback at $29,695, excluding a $1,295 destination and handling charge.
The 2027 Civic Sedan and Hatchback are arriving at dealerships now, and Sport-L joins the lineup by year-end. Honda said hybrids account for more than 30% of Civic sales this year.
“Civic has earned its place as America’s best-selling compact car by delivering the fun, efficiency and value that customers expect from Honda,” said Luis Guerra, Assistant Vice President of Honda National Auto Sales at American Honda, in a company statement.
S+ Shift adds a performance feel to the hybrid
The Civic Sport Touring Hybrid adds Honda S+ Shift, a drive mode first used on the 2026 Honda Prelude. The mode simulates a performance transmission with virtual rev-matched downshifts and gear holding. It also adds enhanced engine sounds. The Sedan Sport Touring Hybrid starts at $32,695 and the Hatchback at $33,895. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) ratings are 50 mpg city for both body styles. Highway is 47 for the Sedan hybrids and 44 for the Hatchback.
