Stellantis officially unveiled STLA AutoDrive, its first in-house-developed automated driving system. This driving technology introduces hands-free and eyes-off (SAE Level 3) capabilities. STLA AutoDrive is a significant pillar of Stellantis’ broader technology strategy, alongside its STLA Brain and STLA Smart Cockpit initiatives, which focus on vehicle intelligence, automation, and user experience.

The system’s hands-free and eyes-off capabilities are operational at speeds up to 37 mph, even in challenging weather conditions such as light rain or road spray. This allows drivers to temporarily disengage from routine driving tasks, especially in stop-and-go traffic, making commutes in dense urban areas more efficient and less stressful.

The system requires drivers to remain seated, belted, and ready to take control of the wheel when necessary. The system is also fully compliant with regional regulations and local laws, including restrictions on phone use while driving.

STLA AutoDrive offers Level 2 (hands-on) and Level 2+ (hands-off, eyes-on) capabilities for higher-speed driving, including adaptive cruise control and lane centering. This ensures that even when the system is not in full autonomous mode, it provides substantial support for the driver by maintaining safe following distances and adjusting to traffic flow.

STLA AutoDrive’s operation is seamless and user-friendly. Once activated, the system manages steering, braking, and speed adjustments based on traffic conditions. The system continuously monitors the vehicle’s surroundings through sensors, ensuring it reacts swiftly and naturally to real on-the-road situations, such as merging traffic or changes in speed limits. An automated sensor-cleaning feature ensures the system’s components remain clear for optimal performance.

Stellantis plans to enhance STLA AutoDrive with features such as higher-speed autonomous driving, up to 59 mph, and off-road capabilities for select models. The system is built on a scalable architecture that can be integrated into Stellantis-branded vehicles across international markets, ensuring a smooth and adaptable deployment strategy.

STLA AutoDrive is also designed to evolve, with continuous updates delivered via over-the-air (OTA) enhancements and real-time data integration. This ensures that the system’s performance remains optimized throughout its lifecycle.
