The popularity of electric vehicles can be seen in the list of semifinalists for the 2023 North American Car, Truck, and Utility Vehicle of the Year. The list was announced yesterday at the Detroit Auto Show.

Electric vehicles made up 13 of the 26 finalists. This includes two of the three finalists for Truck of the Year. The category comprises family vehicles and commercial vehicles and shows the increase in the presence of EVs in the pickup segment.

The Utility Vehicle of the Year category included eight EVs among the 13 semifinalists and four more that offer hybrid versions.

As for Car of the Year, three of the ten semifinalists are fully EVs, and two offer hybrid models. No US-based automaker has a car up for the award in the category this year.

A jury of 50 automotive journalists present the awards and choose the list from every new vehicle introduced for sale in a given year. Winners will be announced on January 11, 2024, in Detroit. The semifinalists by category are listed below.
