GM cancels rare-earth magnet supply deal as EV strategy shifts

General Motors terminated a long-term agreement with a South Carolina magnet plant, triggering arbitration as the automaker pulls back on electric vehicle investments.

GM cancels rare-earth magnet supply deal as EV strategy shifts

On the Dash:

  • GM canceled a long-term supply agreement with e-VAC Magnetics, which planned to provide 90% of its U.S. plant’s output to the automaker.
  • The dispute reflects GM’s broader EV pullback, including a $6 billion charge in January 2026 to unwind some electric vehicle investments.
  • The arbitration highlights the challenges of building U.S. rare-earth magnet production as automakers reassess EV demand and supply commitments.

According to regulatory documents filed with the Securities and Exchange Commission, which first arose in April, General Motors (GM) has terminated a long-term magnet supply agreement with e-VAC Magnetics, the U.S. division of Germany’s Vacuumschmelze (VAC).

GM disclosed in its own filing that a supplier of a component used in EV traction motors has initiated arbitration seeking damages after GM terminated a strategic sourcing agreement.

Energy Fuels, which agreed in June to acquire VAC for $1.9 billion, disclosed in its own filings that a customer terminated its agreement effective July 1 and that VAC began arbitration proceedings several days later. Energy Fuels didn’t name the customer, but a person familiar with the situation confirmed that GM was the customer.

Spotlight on domestic magnet production plans

VAC launched its $500 million magnet plant in South Carolina in late 2025 with annual capacity of just under 2,000 metric tons. VAC CEO Erik Eschen told Reuters in September 2025 that VAC planned to sell 90% of the plant’s output to GM and supply the remainder to the U.S. government.

When VAC and GM announced the agreement in 2023, VAC said the plant would support GM for at least 10 years and supply magnets for a wide range of EV models. VAC’s U.S. unit now alleges wrongful termination and seeks damages in arbitration.

The termination follows GM’s broader retreat from EV investments, as the automaker scaled back its EV plans after federal incentives and tax breaks that supported the market disappeared and took a $6 billion charge in January 2026 to unwind some of those investments. According to SEC filings, the dispute with e-VAC first emerged in April 2026.

Acquisition adds uncertainty

Energy Fuels, primarily a uranium producer for the nuclear power industry, plans to acquire VAC to become one of the world’s largest non-Chinese producers of rare-earth magnets used in the aerospace, defense and renewable energy sectors. Energy Fuels amended the merger agreement in October to allow purchase-price adjustments tied to the arbitration outcome, and the company said it knew about the dispute while negotiating the acquisition.
