Waymo expands robotaxi services to all of LA, targets national growth

The company's expansion in LA marks a major step towards nationwide autonomous mobility.
Waymo expands in LA

On November 12, Alphabet’s Waymo swiftly removed its waitlist and expanded its robotaxi service to all of Los Angeles.

Almost overnight, a staggering number of over 300,000 Los Angeles residents transferred from the waitlist to having full access to Waymo’s services through the Waymo One app. This significant expansion also adds 80 square miles to Los Angeles’s coverage zone, making it an essential step in the right direction for autonomous ride-hailing.

This strategic Los Angeles expansion marks the company’s largest expansion to date. With a population of 3.6 million, LA is one of Waymo’s third-largest markets, following Phoenix and San Francisco. The robotaxi service now sees 150,000 weekly rides across its current markets, a staggering increase from 100,000 in August.

Due to significant financial backing, Waymo has been rapidly picking up momentum and expanding its operations over the last year. In October, the company secured a substantial $5.6 billion in funding from a pool of investors to support its expansion efforts. This notable investment will pave the way for Waymo’s ambitious plans to scale its operation nationwide.

In September, the company secured a partnership with Uber and plans to expand its ride-hailing services to Austin and Atlanta soon. It has also signed a partnership with Hyundai, which will supply Waymo’s robotaxi fleet with its Ioniq 5 electric vehicle.

Waymo’s rapid expansion marks a monumental shift in autonomous mobility and underscores the company’s commitment to reshaping urban transportation. By addressing consumers’ demand for safe, reliable, and fully autonomous ride-hailing options, Waymo is successfully positioning itself as the industry authority on these services. This expansion not only provides more convenient transportation options for the public but also contributes to reducing traffic congestion and carbon emissions in urban areas.
