New name, same Scandinavian confidence: 2025 Volvo EX40 Twin Motor Ultra — Lauren Fix

Volvo’s smallest electric SUV just got a new name, but the essence of what made the previous XC40 Recharge a standout remains intact—and in some ways, it’s better than ever. Meet the 2025 Volvo EX40 Twin Motor Ultra, a premium compact electric SUV with Scandinavian flair, a powerful drivetrain, and enough tech to keep even the most connected drivers satisfied.

What’s new for 2025?

The biggest change is in the name. The EX40 replaces the outgoing XC40 Recharge, aligning Volvo’s nomenclature with its evolving all-electric future. But this isn’t just a badge swap—the EX40 Twin Motor Ultra adds more power, refined driving characteristics, and new personalization options.

Volvo has given the twin-motor setup a 34-horsepower bump, bringing total output to a strong 436 horsepower. It also introduces unique pedal mapping for quicker response and a new Performance mode that unleashes the EV’s full potential. The result? A 0–60 time of just 4.1 seconds, putting this SUV squarely in sports car territory.

Powertrain and driving dynamics

Under the skin, the EX40 remains a dual-motor, all-wheel-drive machine. The 402-hp base setup now benefits from 494 lb-ft of torque, drawing from an 82 kWh lithium-ion battery. Volvo estimates 94 MPGe and a range of 260 to 296 miles, depending on configuration. NACS charging will not be available until 2026.

The driving experience is smooth and sure-footed, thanks to Electric Power Assisted Steering, Shift-by-Wire single-speed transmission, and 20″ diamond-cut alloy wheels. Volvo’s One Pedal Drive makes stop-and-go traffic more tolerable, while standard Hill Start Assist and Anti-Lock Brakes ensure peace of mind in hilly or slippery conditions.

While the EX40 is plenty quick and composed, its ride prioritizes comfort over sportiness—drivers seeking razor-sharp handling might lean toward the Porsche Macan EV or Tesla Model Y.

Interior comfort and technology

Inside, the EX40 delivers on Volvo’s reputation for understated luxury. The Ultra trim features power front seats with memory and mechanical cushion extensions, heated front and rear seats, and a heated steering wheel—all standard. Volvo even includes an air purifier and power folding rear headrests, thoughtful touches in a family-friendly EV.

Tech lovers won’t be disappointed either. A 12.3-inch digital driver display, built-in Google services, Bluetooth, Apple CarPlay, and Harman Kardon premium audio system come standard, alongside a 4-year Digital Services subscription. Remote start, OTA updates, and wireless charging round out a well-connected cabin.

There are a few hiccups in the infotainment system—some users may find the Google interface less intuitive than traditional setups—but overall, the system is capable and forward-looking.

Safety first, as always

Volvo doesn’t skimp on safety. The EX40 includes:

  • 360° SurroundView Camera
  • Automated Emergency Braking with pedestrian and cyclist detection
  • Lane Departure Warning with lane-keeping assist
  • Adaptive Cruise Control with semi-autonomous driving capabilities

These features come standard, keeping Volvo at the forefront of proactive driver assistance.

Design and value

The EX40 blends classic Volvo simplicity with modern edge. LED lighting, a panoramic sunroof, and sculpted bodywork create an upscale look. Buyers can opt for the Black Edition appearance package, which adds Onyx Black paint, gloss black trim, and five-spoke alloys for added street presence.

Cargo space is practical, with 22 cubic feet behind the second row and up to 58 cu ft with seats folded. The front trunk is ideal for stowing charging cables, a smart use of otherwise wasted space.

Pricing, warranty, and trims

The EX40 comes in six trims, offering flexibility for buyers. Prices start at $53,795 and top out around $62,045, as tested here in the Ultra trim AWD. That puts it in the ring with the Audi SQ6 e-tron, Polestar 3, Genesis GV70 Electrified, and Jaguar I-Pace.

Volvo’s solid 48-month/50,000-mile warranty is backed by a 100,000-mile battery warranty, with 4 years or 40,000 miles of scheduled maintenance included.

Final thoughts

The 2025 Volvo EX40 Twin Motor Ultra proves that Volvo is serious about its electric future. With quick acceleration, a comfortable and tech-savvy interior, and Volvo’s signature safety features, it stands out as a compelling premium EV SUV. While it may lack the extreme range or sporty edge of some rivals, it delivers a balanced, luxurious experience that many buyers will find hits the sweet spot.

Pros:

  • Rapid acceleration
  • Upscale, practical interior
  • Strong safety tech

Cons:

  • Range still trails top competitors
  • Infotainment system learning curve
  • Softer handling than some rivals

If you’re looking for a well-rounded electric SUV with Scandinavian roots, the EX40 should absolutely be on your list.
