GM recalls over 40,000 Chevrolet trucks over fire-causing brake fluid leak

General Motors is recalling over 40,000 Chevrolet trucks after discovering a potential fire hazard in certain models.

The recall affects 40,428 Silverado pickups built between 2019 and 2023, specifically the 6500HD, 5500HD and 4500HD models. According to the automaker’s filing with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, brake fluid can leak from the vehicle’s brake pressure sensor assembly onto the brake pressure switch. The leak can cause the components to short-circuit and even catch fire.

In the document, GM warns that the risk is present while driving or parked and urges owners of the impacted Chevrolet trucks to park outside and away from buildings or other property, minimizing the damage in the event of a catastrophic failure. As with other recalls, dealers will offer free repair services, replacing the master cylinder pressure sensor and checking the wire harness at no charge. While affected owners will receive notice by mail after May 29, those wishing to check early can visit the NHTSA’s website and input their vehicle identification number.

The automaker has initiated several other recalls in 2023, although at a slower rate compared to other brands. Most recently, Chevrolet, Cadillac and GMC SUVs were recalled for faulty transmissions in March. Since last year, GM has remained laser-focused on the expansion of its electric vehicle business and plans to stop producing gas-powered vehicles by 2035. While the subsidiary only has one fully electric product, the Bolt, the OEM is planning to launch its first battery-powered Chevrolet truck, the 2023 Silverado EV, later this fall.
