Tesla workers seek to unionize in New York

The latest labor issue for CEO Elon Musk will come when Tesla workers in New York announced earlier this week that they will begin a campaign to form a union.

The workers at Tesla revealed their intention to unionize with Workers United Upstate New York in a letter to the company’s management.

Tesla, unlike some other major manufacturers, has so far refrained from unionization at its American operations, so the union, if it were to be formed, would be a first for the company.

In the past, Musk has been outspoken about his opposition to unions, and the U.S. National Labor Relations Board reprimanded him for a 2018 tweet in which he claimed that workers would forfeit their stock options if they organized a union.

In a news release on February 14, the employees claimed: “We feel that becoming unionized will give us a voice in our workplace that has been absent up until now. All we need is a seat in the vehicle we helped construct “they claim.

In addition to urging the world’s most valuable manufacturer to join the Fair Election Principles, the letter, which was first made public by Bloomberg News, contained pleas from Tesla employees for the firm to support their right to organize a union. Because organizing a union is a fundamental civic right, workers asserted, Tesla is not allowed to threaten or punish against them.

Therefore, the next stage for organizers is to gather employee signatures indicating a desire for a union. The National Labor Relations Board will then likely receive a petition from them requesting to hold a union election.

To hold an election, at least 30% of the workers in a prospective bargaining unit must sign ballots.
