The auto industry is only a part of the TPP, but according to some politicians, the trade deal would give Japan an advantage over the U.S. and help boost Japanese car sales in the U.S., but not help U.S. car sales in Japan. Ohio Senator Sherrod Brown is one of those that opposes it, saying, “The auto language is worse than NAFTA’S was.”
An example of that language the agreement stipulates how much of a vehicle’s content must come from a member-country to get duty-free status. When asked about it, Donald Trump told CNN, “we are getting ripped off by China, by Japan, by Mexico, everyone we do business with.” He then added, “I’m going to renegotiate those trade deals and I’m going to make them good.”
Among the republicans who approve it: Ohio Gov. John Kasich and Ben Carson. Those who oppose it: Texas Senator Ted Cruz and Donald Trump. Senator Marco Rubio voted in favor of a measure giving President Obama authority to negotiate the deal and present it to congress. Among the democratic candidates: both Senator Bernie Sanders and Former Secretary Of State Hillary Clinton say they oppose it.
Obviously, labor groups (like the UAW) are oppose the deal.
