2025 Chevrolet Equinox RS: A closer look at Chevy’s compact SUV contender

Chevrolet has long relied on the Equinox as one of its most popular vehicles, and for 2025, the model gets a fresh look, more technology, and refined features aimed squarely at the competitive compact SUV market. With trims like LT, RS, and Activ, Chevrolet is giving buyers more ways to tailor their Equinox experience. The RS, in particular, stands out with a sportier design, upgraded interior touches, and a healthy suite of technology.

The compact SUV segment is one of the most crowded in the auto industry. It’s where families, young professionals, and empty nesters alike look for practical transportation with a blend of efficiency, safety, and versatility. With competition from Toyota, Honda, Mazda, Hyundai, and Ford, Chevy’s updates to the Equinox are designed to keep it firmly in the conversation for 2025 and beyond.

Exterior style that stands out

The Equinox RS doesn’t shy away from bold styling. Black emblems and mirrors, a wide grille opening, and gloss-black accents give it a confident stance. Buyers can further enhance the design with an available black roof. Standard 19-inch Carbon Flash machined aluminum wheels contribute to the RS’s athletic appearance, while available 20-inch wheels push the style envelope even further.

It’s a look that places the RS above more conservative trims and signals that this Equinox aims to appeal to drivers who want a little more personality in their SUV.

Performance and handling

Under the hood, the 2025 Equinox RS carries a 1.5-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine producing 175 horsepower and 203 lb-ft of torque. While not the most powerful option in its class, it delivers solid everyday performance with either a continuously variable transmission (CVT) in front-wheel-drive models or an eight-speed automatic in all-wheel-drive versions.

The Equinox is rated at 26 mpg combined, a respectable figure for the segment. Those who opt for AWD also gain driver-selectable modes, including an Off-Road mode for added confidence in light trail conditions. In testing, the RS moved from zero to 60 mph in about 8.6 seconds — adequate for commuting and daily driving, though not especially quick compared to some competitors.

Towing capability tops out at 1,500 pounds when equipped with all-wheel drive, enough for small trailers or light recreational gear. While performance enthusiasts may wish for more punch or even a hybrid option, the Equinox prioritizes efficiency and usability over thrills.

Safety comes first

Chevrolet has made safety a priority, and all trims of the 2025 Equinox benefit from an extensive list of driver-assistance features. Standard equipment includes Automatic Emergency Braking, Forward Collision Alert, Front Pedestrian and Bicyclist Braking, Following Distance Indicator, and Lane Keep Assist with Lane Departure Warning. Chevy also includes its Teen Driver system, helping parents encourage safe driving habits for younger drivers.

The RS trim and higher models take safety even further. Additional available technologies include Side Bicyclist Alert, Adaptive Cruise Control, Lane Change Alert with Side Blind Zone Alert, Rear Cross Traffic Braking, Rear Park Assist, and Enhanced Automatic Emergency Braking. For those who want the most complete protection, the Safety and Technology Package ($1,085) adds HD Surround Vision, Rear Pedestrian Alert, Rear Camera Mirror with washer, and front fog lamps.

Interior comfort and convenience

Step inside the Equinox RS, and the focus shifts to modern design and comfort. Seating for five comes standard, with cloth upholstery on base models and optional faux leather for those wanting an upgrade. The RS trim adds distinctive touches with Torch Red and Santorini Blue stitching, RS logos debossed into the headrests, and a heated, flat-bottom steering wheel that feels both stylish and practical.

The available Convenience Package III ($950) adds premium features like an eight-way power passenger seat with lumbar adjustment, ventilated front seats, heated rear seats, and memory settings. These options elevate the cabin from basic utility to something much more comfortable for longer drives.

Cargo space is generous, offering 29.8 cubic feet behind the rear seats and expanding to 63.5 cubic feet when the second row is folded down. A hidden cargo floor provides extra storage flexibility, a feature that families and road-trippers will appreciate.

Technology and connectivity

Chevrolet has embraced digital integration in the 2025 Equinox, making the cabin feel modern and connected. A large 11.3-inch touchscreen serves as the central hub, with Google built-in, wireless Apple CarPlay, and Android Auto standard. Drivers also benefit from an 11-inch digital instrument cluster that presents key information clearly.

Other available features include wireless charging, a six-speaker audio system, and subscription-based OnStar services with eight years of OnStar Basics included. For those who value visibility and awareness, the optional Safety and Technology Package upgrades to HD Surround Vision and adds the Rear Camera Mirror.

Design and build quality

Across the LT, RS, and Activ trims, the Equinox is offered in a wide range of exterior colors and finishes. The RS test model featured Radiant Red Tintcoat ($495), paired with 19-inch aluminum wheels and an optional panoramic sunroof ($1,495). Inside, the mix of physical and digital controls strikes a practical balance, ensuring that essential functions remain easy to access without being buried in menus.

Build quality is consistent with expectations for the segment. While not as luxurious as some higher-priced competitors, the Equinox RS offers a strong mix of durability and modern styling, making it an appealing choice for buyers who prioritize value.

Pricing and value

Pricing for the 2025 Equinox starts at $29,995 and extends up to $34,395, depending on trim and options. The RS test model we evaluated carried a sticker price of $40,310 with packages and upgrades included. While this pushes it to the upper end of the segment, the overall equipment, design, and safety features make it competitive with rivals like the Honda CR-V, Toyota RAV4, Mazda CX-50, Hyundai Tucson, Kia Sportage, and Ford Bronco Sport.

Pros and cons

The 2025 Chevrolet Equinox RS brings plenty to the table: sharp exterior design, a comfortable and tech-rich interior, a robust safety suite, and strong value for the money. However, the 1.5-liter engine leaves some drivers wishing for more power, and unlike several competitors, Chevrolet does not yet offer a hybrid variant — a gap in an era when fuel efficiency and electrification are increasingly important.

Final thoughts

The 2025 Chevrolet Equinox RS strikes a balance between style, technology, and practicality. It’s not the most powerful SUV in its class, but it’s a confident, comfortable, and safe option for buyers who want a well-equipped compact crossover without breaking the bank. For Chevrolet, it’s a smart update that ensures the Equinox remains a serious contender in one of the most competitive segments on the market.

In a field crowded with worthy choices, the Equinox RS stands out with bold styling and plenty of features. For buyers weighing practicality against price, the 2025 Equinox delivers solid value and keeps Chevrolet’s long-running compact SUV relevant in a tough race.
